Attended this concert with Eleanor and Mikaela yesterday. Tsung Yeh is a conductor that I really like. I was quite impressed by him when I first saw him a few years ago. Even though he has stepped down as the Principal Conductor of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO), I would still make time to attend his concert where possible.
We caught Liu Wenwen, a young contemporary suona performer from China, during the concert. She’s China’s first PhD holder in suona studies, is a suona teacher at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and is the Artist-In-Residence at Guangdong Chinese Orchestra.
As Eleanor said after the concert, Wenwen totally changed the perception of the suona. Indeed, she was able to blend the sound of the suona into the overall music composition. Hopefully, we will have the opportunity to see her in action in Shanghai in the future.
